South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa regretted as “unfortunate” the US embassy’s issuing of a unilateral warning of a possible weekend “terrorist” attack in the country. He said his country was not consulted, while the US embassy issued that warning, as should be the normal practice in diplomatic circles.
The US embassy recently posted the alert on its website and identified the potential target as Sandton, a suburb in the country’s financial hub of Johannesburg, as reported by www.trendanafrica.com.
Sandton lies in the midst of a collection of high-end shops and lofty office blocks and banks, is the richest square on the African continent. While expressing his regret over the US embassy’s unilateral decision, the president lamented that it was quite unfortunate the US issued that type of warning without having any type of discussion with the local authorities.

The embassy said the US government had received information that terrorists may be planning to conduct an attack targeting large gatherings of people at an unspecified location in the greater Sandton area of Johannesburg, which was widely shared in social media, while South African authorities downplayed the warning. Several alerts have been issued about possible imminent attacks in South Africa in recent years. However, no untoward incident had taken place so far.
