The South African presidency has scotched social media reports which rumoured the illness of President Cyril Ramaphosa and his hospitalisation in Pretoria. What lent credence to the social media blitz about his health condition was the President’s absence from a recent ANC meeting in Mpumalanga province. The ANC explained that his absence from the meeting was due to some emergency and stopped short of telling what it was.
Presidential spokesperson Vincent Magwenya clarified on social media that the president was well, was not hospitalized, and no emergency occurred. He further said that the President chose to spend the day at home, preparing for a busy week. He termed the rumours as malicious.

Ramaphosa is the candidate of the ANC for the presidential elections scheduled for February 2024. The steady erosion of support for the ANC, which ruled the country for a long time since the lifting of apartheid is causing panic among the party workers. There are also reports that if the party cannot muster the support of 50% of votes, it has to ally with some opposition parties to stay in power. In that situation, the ANC’s continuous overwhelming influence over policy matters and governance will be eroded.
