Ramaphosa Appoints Special Envoy to the US to Strengthen Diplomatic Relations

Trump has accused the Black-led South African government of mistreating the white minority at home. He also criticised its foreign policy as anti-American. He signed an executive order in February cutting U.S. funding to South Africa over those issues.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa appointed former Deputy Finance Minister Mcebisi Jonas as a special envoy to the United States. The South African Presidency feels that Mcebisi Jonas’s appointment would help South Africa rebuild its relationship with the United States. The relationship has deteriorated swiftly since President Donald Trump took office.

Trump accuses South Africa of denying the legitimate rights of the white farmers to own land through draconic legislation.  The South African Administration denied the accusation.

Trump also made it clear that he did not want to attend the Group of 20 summit this year if it were held in South Africa, as scheduled. South Africa assumed the rotational presidency of the G20 group of developed and developing nations and to host world leaders and top diplomats for a summit in Johannesburg in November.
