According to a statement released by the Holy See Press Office, during the “cordial talks,” “mutual appreciation was expressed for the valuable contribution that the Catholic Church provides to South Africa,” particularly “in the areas of education and healthcare.”

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa was received by Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican on Saturday. The meeting at the Apostolic Palace, described by the South African government as an effort to “foster mutual understanding,” featured an exchange of gifts and a cordial chat.
