British oil explorer Tullow suspends transport of crude oil from Turkana to Mombasa due to incessant rains that caused severe damage to roads. The British firm also had halted trucking of crude late last year due to the same reasons. In the incessant rains during the season, trucking becomes very difficult and takes longer hours to reach destinations. Flooding and inundation of roads are also common.

According to reports coming from Kenya, Turkana County was among the most severely affected regions by recent floods. The British company uses over 100 tankers to move 2,000 barrels per day over 1,000 kilometres. The trucks being called off the road means that the government is unlikely to meet its shipment target of 500,000 barrels of oil. Earlier also evacuation of oil to the port for exports suffered delay on account of the protests by local population. People staying sidelines and nearby places of roads leading to ports demanded more security from bandits, who looted them. This issue is now resolved.

Experts feel that the Kenyan government has to spend heavily in repairing and upgrading roads to insulate it from traffic disruptions.
