According to the official Qatar News Agency (QNA), Qatar and the UN-backed Libyan Government of National Accord (GNA) have signed a security cooperation agreement in Doha during the visit of an official delegation from Libya to Doha last week.
The agreement was signed in the presence of Qatar’s Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Khalid bin Khalifa bin Abdulaziz Al-Thani, GNA foreign minister Mohamed al-Taher Siala and Interior Minister Fathi Bashagha. The three-year agreement is expected to boost cooperation, particularly in the fields of counterterrorism and organized crime.
The deal with Qatar was signed following Libya’s two warring factions signed a “permanent” ceasefire agreement last week in Geneva. However, in a statement issued by a spokesman for warlord Khalifa Haftar, GNA’s rival administration has condemned the deal. Qatar and Turkey are staunch supporters of GNA and has been supporting and funding the Tripoli-based government against its rival in the east of the country, which in turn is supported by Russia, UAE, France and Egypt.
