George Weah, President of Liberia during his recent visit to Qatar received a commitment from Emir of the Qatar, Tamin bin Hamad Al Thani, to fund the second phase of the Lofa Road project.
Though the second most populated county in Liberia, poor road connectivity in Lofa made it to be one of the least developed in post-conflict Liberia. Since 1964, Lofa has remained backward due to the deplorable conditions of the roads. Before its road infrastructure deteriorated, Lofa used to be a major producer of crops like rice, plantain, and ground nuts.
The first phase of the project, which the Qatari government is also helping to fund, through the Arab Bank for Economic Development (BADEA), is nearing completion.
During the bilateral meeting with Emir, President Weah also sought the support of Qatar in the areas of health, agriculture, infrastructure development, and the building of basic skills. A Qatari delegation had earlier visited Liberia to assess the development needs of the country. The Qatari team during the visit engaged with several line Ministries and Agencies; including the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Health, Youth and Sports, Internal Affairs, Commerce, Trade and Industry; and Gender, Children and Social Protection.
