African peace initiative on Ukraine, Putin said could be the basis of some processes aimed at the search for peace as also the Chinese initiative. Both initiatives do not contradict or compete with each other, he said, adding that the conversation with African leaders was long and substantive.

The Russian leader also brushed aside a question about why he would not be attending the BRICS forum in August in South Africa. He claimed that his presence at the summit is irrelevant while making no mention of the arrest warrant issued against him by the International Criminal Court. Significantly, 17 heads of state attended the summit and most of the other countries had sent their senior functionaries to attend the meeting.
