Russian President Vladimir Putin has commended the strong alignment between Russia and Zimbabwe on global affairs, highlighting Moscow’s efforts to deepen partnerships across Africa as global alliances continue to shift.

Speaking in Moscow during a high-level meeting with Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa, Putin emphasised that the two countries hold closely aligned positions on key international issues. He reiterated support for a just, multipolar world order based on adherence to international law, according to the Russian news agency TASS.

Putin expressed gratitude for Zimbabwe’s ongoing support of Russian stances at the United Nations and other multilateral forums. “We appreciate your country’s backing of our initiatives on global platforms,” he told Mnangagwa.

The meeting underscores Russia’s expanding diplomatic, economic, and military outreach in Africa, a strategy that has intensified since the country’s isolation from the West following its 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Zimbabwe, also under longstanding Western sanctions, has become a central ally for Moscow in Southern Africa.

Putin also referenced the Russia-Africa Partnership Forum, pointing to the inaugural ministerial meeting in Sochi in November 2023, and noted that preparations are underway for another session later this year.

Mnangagwa, in turn, affirmed Zimbabwe’s commitment to strengthening its “historic friendship” with Russia, citing areas of cooperation that include mining, energy, education, and defense. Russian companies have increasingly invested in Zimbabwe’s mining sector, particularly in platinum and diamonds.

The leaders are expected to finalise several agreements to boost trade, investment, and collaboration in agriculture and technology. This diplomatic engagement signals Russia’s ongoing efforts to present itself as a key partner to nations in the Global South, positioning its model of development and cooperation as an alternative to Western influence.
