Demonstrators in Burkina Faso gathered outside former president Thomas Sankara’s memorial in Ouagadougou recently to reject the presence of the French military in the country. A newly formed coalition, M30 Naaba Wobgo, called for the termination of cooperation agreements with France. Protesters held banners against the French military presence and chanted slogans against the French presence in the region. They also wanted closure of the French embassy in the country and the recall of the French Ambassador. Also, the movement announced a rally on 12 August to demand an end to French politics in all its forms and the departure of the French ambassador.

French President Emmanuel Macron recently visited Cameroon, Benin and Guinea-Bissau. The visit was meant to renew relationships with countries in the region. Sources closer to the administration of the country maintain that the protests were stage-managed by forces closer to Russia, which has a vested interest in intensifying their interests in the region.
