Protests against Macron’s visit to Gabon

In Gabon, there are criticisms voiced against the visit of French President Macron from some quarters.  They view Macron’s forthcoming visit as a way to support President Ali Bongo, who was elected under controversial conditions in 2016. Critics believe that the visit of Macron will indirectly pave the way for the re-election of Bongo this year.

The French president is visiting Gabon to participate in the One Forest Summit. The event is aimed to advance the preservation and sustainable management of tropical forests.

The protesters allege that the event on the environment is a gimmick to support Gabon’s dictatorship.  France, through the arrival of Macron in Gabon, is simply supporting the Bongo’s dictatorship, say people who are against Macron’s visit.
