Project in the Suez Canal Economic Zone to Produce Green Ammonia

·       The Emirati AMEA Power Company has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Suez Canal Economic Zone, The Sovereign Fund of Egypt, the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company, and the New and Renewable Energy Authority, to set up a project to produce green ammonia within the Suez Canal Economic Zone.

 The Emirati AMEA Power Company has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Suez Canal Economic Zone, The Sovereign Fund of Egypt, the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company, and the New and Renewable Energy Authority, to set up a project to produce green ammonia within the Suez Canal Economic Zone.

Under the MOU, a manufacturing facility will be set up with a capacity to produce 235,000 tonnes of ammonia annually, in the economic zone of the Suez Canal. The proposal includes stepping up the output to 390,000 tons annually. Green hydrogen produced from desalinated sea water will feed the facility and the transmission will be carried out through the national electricity grid. The facility is expected to be set up by the end of this year and the trial operation scheduled by the end of 2025.The project will be implemented in multiple phases. The pilot phase is planned for the production of 235,000 tons of ammonia.

The MoU was signed between the Suez Canal Economic Zone, Egypt’s Sovereign Fund, the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company, the New and Renewable Energy Authority, and the Green Fuel Alliance consisting of Zero Waste and EDF Renewables.

Another MoU signed with the Green Fuel Alliance aims to establish a project with investments of up to $3bn.The project  in the economic zone of the Suez Canal in Ain Sokhna targets producing 140, 000 tonnes of green ammonia annually, with plans to increase  the production to 350,000 tonnes annually. The setting up of the project is expected to start in 2024, and commercial operation by 2026.
