In livestock markets around the capital Bamako, the prices of animals have shot up beyond the reach of ordinary people. Butchers and consumers alike are being asked for upwards of 500 Euro a cow, double the price that prevailed earlier.
The high cost of livestock is due to many factors. The maintenance cost of livestock has gone up considerably. Also, the transport cost from rural areas, where the livestock is maintained, has increased. Added to that, one has to incur incidental expenses like loading and unloading expenses.

Islamist violence in Mali has also hit cattle herding areas. It has forced many people to abandon their trade. Climate change too has had its heavy toll. There is a shortage of grazing lands and water, leading to increased costs for breeders. Inflation has dampened the mood of this year’s festivities. People want the intervention of authorities to bring down prices.
