In a major stride towards agricultural transformation, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially launched the Renewed Hope Agricultural Mechanisation Programme, marking, as he called it, the beginning of Nigeria’s agricultural renaissance. The initiative, unveiled during a ceremony at the National Agricultural Seeds Council in Abuja, includes the deployment of 2,000 tractors across the country to modernise farming operations and boost food production.
President Tinubu emphasised that his administration is committed to revolutionising Nigeria’s agriculture sector. The launch of this mechanisation initiative, he said, is not just a policy move but a fulfilment of a critical promise made at the onset of his tenure. “Two years ago, I raised an alarm over our looming food security crisis and demanded innovative, immediate solutions. Today marks a concrete step in that direction,” Tinubu stated.
He described the programme as a landmark achievement in the national food security agenda, designed to empower farmers, stimulate rural development, and promote economic stability. The mechanisation drive is seen as a core part of the administration’s vision to position agriculture as a cornerstone of national development.
President Tinubu made it clear that his government’s ambitions stretch far beyond achieving food self-sufficiency. The goal, he said, is to transform Nigeria into a global agricultural powerhouse—capable of not only feeding its population with affordable and nutritious food but also exporting high-quality produce to international markets.
“Agricultural productivity is directly linked to national stability and food sovereignty,” he stated. “Our farmers are resilient. With access to modern tools and technology, they can lead the charge into a new era of prosperity.”
The 2,000 tractors, along with various agricultural implements, will be deployed across the nation using a service-provider model. This approach is designed to enable smallholder farmers—who constitute the backbone of Nigeria’s food production—to access machinery that would otherwise be unaffordable. By reducing manual labour and improving efficiency, the programme aims to boost crop yields and increase income levels in rural communities. President Tinubu called on Nigerians to seize this opportunity to achieve agricultural independence. “We have the land, the people, and now the tools. Let today be remembered as the start of a new agricultural era, where technology meets tradition to build a better future,” he said.
Acknowledging the role of international cooperation, President Tinubu highlighted the involvement of the Republic of Belarus, which has been instrumental in supplying the tractors and related technology. Belarus is also contributing to capacity-building efforts by providing training and support for Nigerian youth in machinery operation, maintenance, and local fabrication.
