President of Ghana Nana Akufo-Addo, who is doubling as the current President of Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is on a visit to Mali’s capital Bamako. He is on the mission to take stock of the political transition in the country and to discuss the roadmap for the next election. The visiting dignitary, who was received by Mali’s transitional president Bah Ndaw on Sunday will take stock of the political transition and will discuss the next steps to ensure that the deadline of the eventual election is met.
Reports indicate that Mali is gearing to ensure regional solidarity. A few days ago, both ECOWAS and African Union lifted the embargo on Mali since the country has, to a very extent, fulfilled the conditions set for lifting the embargo, particularly installing a civilian government. The controversial issues still persisting could be continuance of military junta leader as vice president and non release of the previous president and other political leaders from custody. It appears that both ECOWAS and African Union are putting pressure on Mali to comply with that demand, particularly regarding the release of political leaders.
The Ghanaian president is the first head of state to visit the West African nations since the ECOWAS-imposed sanctions were lifted. Interestingly, in the meantime, the Ghana president has thrown his hat into the ring for the next term as the president, elections of which would take place shortly.
