Marking a sharp departure from the Africa policy of former president Donald Trump, the U.S. president Joe Biden struck a fresh note` promoting a shared vision in U.S.-Africa relations.
In a message sent to participants of the34 th African Union Summit, held virtually, the US president called for more trade and investment in bilateral ties, peace and security for all Africans, a commitment to democratic institutions and also the promotion of human rights for all, including women and girls and the gay community. He also reiterated US commitment to partner with the AU’s Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (African CDC) and also called for more investment in global health to fight Covid-19.
President Biden pointed out that Pandemic has demonstrated the deep interconnectivity of the world and how fates of nations are bound together. He said that his administration is committed to rebuilding US partnership around the world and hence keen on re-engaging with international institutions like the African Union. Biden also expressed the keenness of the U.S to partner with Africa “in solidarity, support and mutual respect.” He added that the US had full confidence in the continent and its spirit of entrepreneurship and innovation. On climate change, he stressed the importance of ensuring that developing nations can mitigate and adapt to its impact.
