The Democratic Republic of the Congo’s President Felix Tshisekedi is undertaking major military reforms to boost the overall efficiency of the army. As part of the exercise, many new appointments have taken place.
A statement from the presidency announced the appointment of Christian Tshiwewe Songhesha, former commander of the Republican Guard in charge of protecting the head of state, as the new army chief of staff, replacing Célestin Mbala Musense. Jerome Chico Tshitambwe, from the same unit, has become the new deputy chief of staff in charge of operations. According to the statement, almost the entire staff was replaced by young officers. A new military programming law for the period 2022-2025 was also recently drafted that promises more financial autonomy to the army and flexibility in procedures.
The DRC’s army is fighting multiple armed groups, including ethnic militias and other armed groups near the borders with Uganda and Rwanda. The United Nations recently estimated that there are at least 120 armed groups in the East DRC. Military operations by neighbouring states like Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi are also frequent.
