To ensure that the transition process in Mali is not derailed, President Muhammadu Buhari has urged West African leaders to exert pressure on the military leadership in Mali. Speaking at the 59th Ordinary Session of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS in Accra, Ghana last week, he stated that events in Mali were sad reminders that vigilance remains a crucial factor to protect people’s aspirations to freely choose the form of government they want. Mali was recently suspended from the ECOWAS due to the military coup.
President Buhari warned that any more set back in the transition process in Mali could prove catastrophic to the sub-region, as the country is unfortunately under the grip of terrorists. He also appealed to the military leadership in Mali not to perpetuate acts that would destabilise their country.
