President Bola Tinubu Reshuffles Nigeria’s Military Leadership to Bolster National Security

(3 Minutes Read)

Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has dismissed the nation’s top military commanders and appointed a new set of service chiefs, in what his administration describes as a strategic move to reinvigorate the country’s security framework. The decision was confirmed in a statement released by the president’s spokesperson, Sunday Dare.

According to the statement, the sweeping changes are part of efforts to “strengthen the national security architecture” amid ongoing concerns over internal security challenges and recent speculation about instability within the armed forces. The announcement follows closely after the Defence Department publicly denied rumours of a possible coup plot, underscoring the government’s commitment to maintaining discipline and stability within the military hierarchy.

In the new appointments, General Olufemi Oluyede has been named the Chief of Defence Staff, succeeding General Christopher Musa, who has been relieved of his duties. Similarly, Major General W. Shaibu assumes the position of Chief of Army Staff, while Air Vice Marshal S.K. Aneke becomes the Chief of Air Staff. The Nigerian Navy will now be led by Rear Admiral I. Abbas, who takes over as Chief of Naval Staff.

Meanwhile, Major General E.A.P. Undiendeye will continue in his current role as the Chief of Defence Intelligence, reflecting continuity in the country’s intelligence operations despite the broader leadership overhaul.
