President Boko Champions Water Security as Catalyst for Botswana’s Development at Cape Town Summit

(3 Minutes Read)

During the Heads of State Roundtable in Cape Town, President Boko reaffirmed Botswana’s unwavering dedication to achieving universal access to sustainable water and sanitation. He highlighted water security as a cornerstone of the nation’s development agenda, closely tied to social well-being and economic progress.

Given Botswana’s semi-arid climate and the escalating impact of climate change—manifested through prolonged droughts and erratic rainfall—President Boko acknowledged the urgency of addressing water scarcity. However, he framed these challenges as a strategic opportunity to invest in resilient infrastructure.

He outlined Botswana’s initiatives to expand water treatment capacity, build new storage facilities, extend pipeline networks, and improve wastewater reuse systems. These efforts aim to broaden access, enhance water quality, and ensure long-term sustainability.

President Boko urged African nations and international partners to join forces in advancing Sustainable Development Goal 6—clean water and sanitation—emphasizing the importance of collaboration, technology sharing, and funding to support transformative water projects.
