Eskom warned yesterday a “severely constrained” power system since restoration of services of five generation units was delayed and two units got disrupted. The power utility called upon the people to reduce electricity consumption in order to help meet requirements at the peak time.
The restoration of two generation units at Tutuka power station and one unit each at the Duvha, Matimba and Kusile power stations had been delayed. This was further compounded by tripping of the Tutuka power station. Kusile’s Unit 1 had been shut down.
In a statement issued, the power utility said that its teams are working to restore the functioning of the units. The breakdowns have added to the approximately 5 500 MW of capacity out of planned maintenance, while unplanned maintenance has risen to almost 11 000MW. However, the utility did not reveal what caused the tripping and delay in restoration of the functioning of the units under maintenance and repair.
