Energy in Zimbabwe is a serious problem with only 39.9% of the population having access to electricity. The crisis deepened this week due to a grid collapse that plunged most parts of the country into darkness. The Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (Zesa) in a statement said that it was caused by refurbishments at the Kariba Dam which resulted in three units being taken out and announced further increase in load shedding outside the publicised schedules.
However, ZESA holdings came out with a statement later that the three units that were taken out of service at Kariba Hydro Power Station have since been returned to service that will restore 345Mw of power supply to the national grid thus significantly reducing the power supply gap. It also announced that to ensure minimum load shedding during the festive season, the rehabilitation works have been temporarily shelved until 5 January 2022.
According to the political analysts, decades-old electricity problem of Zimbabwe is a striking example corruption, waste of public money, mismanagement and failure to reform.
