Portugal’s president Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa is on a historic visit to Guinea Bissau. He was received by the country’s president Umaro Sissoco Embalo. The last time when the Portuguese president visited the country was some 31 years ago.
Guinea-Bissau was a colony of Portugal that achieved independence in 1973 after the war of independence. The west African country can hark back a tumultuous colonial past, which was acknowledged by the visiting president, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa. Importantly, Guinea-Bissau’s president Umaro Sissoco Embaló, had visited Lisbon in October 2020.
The two countries are expecting that with bilateral visits of heads of states of both countries and strengthening of bilateral relations would help in taking the partnership to a new level. During the bloody war of independence several people from both sides died. Importantly, the visiting dilatory visited a cemetery in Bissau where a hundred Portuguese soldiers who died during the war of independence were cremated. He also paid obeisance to Amilcal Cabral, leader of the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC) who was killed in 1973 in Conakry.
