The citizens of the six Portuguese-speaking countries of Africa, namely, Angola, Cabo Verde, Equatorial Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique and Sao Tome and Principe stand to gain by the new and simplified visa rules adopted by Portugal for Lusophone countries. The Lusophone Compact refers to a financing platform, involving the African Development Bank, Portugal, and the six Portuguese-speaking countries of Africa (PALOPs).

Faced with a growing labour shortage in the country, the Portuguese Council of Ministers decided to amend the law governing the entry, stay, departure, and removal of foreigners from Portugal’s national territory for residents of Lusophone countries. The ratified mobility agreement on visas will promote regular, safe, and orderly channels of migration. It will also open job opportunities in several key sectors such as administrative service, Information and Communications Technology (ICT), hotel, construction, health, and social services, and many more for the people of the Portuguese-speaking nations. Employers’ confederations have been seeking relaxation of the immigration rules pointing out the scarcity of workers in key sectors such as hotels, agriculture, and construction.

Earlier, the immigrants from these countries had to wait many months for getting visa approval if they plan to stay in Portugal for more than 90 days. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ana Catarina Mendes told a news briefing in Maputo on the occasion of the 5th Luso-Mozambican Summit that with the new amendment, visas to enter Portugal for citizens of any CPLP member state will be granted immediately by the consular services, provided there is no expulsion order or a ban to enter the Schengen Area. Nationals of CPLP nations will also be exempted from appearing for an interview at the Portuguese embassy in their home country, Valid travel insurance, covering expenses necessary for medical reasons, proof of sufficient means of subsistence, etc.
