US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo warned the African countries not to
fall prey to the empty promises being made by the Chinese investors
and the government. In a hard hitting reference to the increased
Chinese business activities in the continent, Mike Pompeo said the
Chinese bred corruption, dependency and they do not create employment
opportunities to the local people.
The US Secretary of State was winding up his three day visit to the
Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa, before boarding his flight back to the
US.
While explaining how the US investment policies abroad, particularly
in the African region, the secretary of state offered Africa an
alternative to cooperate with his country. Invoking the name of US
President Donald Trump, he said that his boss (Trump) liked deals and
he wanted more deals between the US and Africa.
It may be recalled that at the China-Africa Summit, Beijing pledged
some US$60 billion for new financing new projects in Africa. However,
Pompeo in turn, did not dish out any figures as to the commitment of
the US to invest in Africa.
