Pompeo praises anti-corruption measures of Nigeria

·        The US Secretary of State Pompeo complimented the Nigerian
government’s drive towards eradicating corruption and expressed the
hope that the most populous country in Africa would be a role model
how the democracy can be nurtured.

·        Nigeria is America’s second largest trading partner in Africa
and has the presence of   U.S. companies, such as Google, Chevron,
KPMG etc., which have  invested over a billion dollars in Nigeria in
2018 alone, creating over 18,000 jobs and indirectly supporting 3
million others

The US Secretary of State Pompeo complimented the Nigerian
government’s drive towards eradicating corruption and expressed the
hope that the most populous country in Africa would be a role model
how the democracy can be nurtured. . He was welcoming the Nigerian
delegation led by its foreign minister Geoffrey Jideofor Kwusike
Onyeama in Washington DC recently. Nigeria, he said, was a real
priority for the Trump administration.

Nigeria is America’s second largest trading partner in Africa and has
the presence of   U.S. companies, such as Google, Chevron, KPMG etc.,
which have invested over a billion dollars in Nigeria in 2018 alone,
creating over 18,000 jobs and indirectly supporting 3 million others.

The secretary of State referred to how both countries could further
augment the trade by investing in infrastructure development. He
called upon the Nigerian government to follow free market economic
policies to attract more investments and underscored the need for
strict enforcement of law to create an ecosystem free of corruption.
It augured well that the Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari
prioritized the fight against corruption, he added.

Secretary Pompeo announced that the US and the Nigerian government had
signed an agreement to return more than US$ 308 million stashed away
by one of its dictators as assets parked in the US. He also touched
upon Nigeria’s recent purchase of 12- US made A-29 aircraft to beef up
the capability of defense  forces  and the US assistance in providing
best training and modern weaponry.
