The Agreement for Lasting Peace through a Permanent Cessation of Hostilities was achieved through the mediation efforts by the African Union and former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo.
After a lot of haggling, a peace deal between the Ethiopian Government and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) was signed on 2nd November in South Africa. The brutal war that erupted in 2020 has claimed many lives and livelihoods.

The AU-led peace talks were launched on Tuesday, October 25, and were expected to end on October 30. But a consensus emerged only by November 2. A disarmament plan and the restoration of aid supplies were signed by both sides after weeks of extensive negotiations, A joint statement outlining key provisions was released at the press conference on November 2.

Speaking about the Agreement, Obasanjo said that it covered restoration of law and order, restoration of services, unhindered access to humanitarian supplies, and protection of civilians, especially women, children, and other vulnerable groups. The United Nations assured its support for the next steps of the Peace process. The UN will continue to mobilize assistance to alleviate suffering in the affected areas, the statement concluded.
