More than 50 countries that are home to half the planet’s population are due to hold national elections in 2024. Some of the notable countries going to poll are Russia, Taiwan, the United Kingdom, India, and El Salvador. The outcome will have implications for human rights, economies, international relations, and prospects for peace in a volatile world, say political analysts.

Less talked about is the forthcoming elections in Africa in 2024. A good number of countries in the region are preparing for elections, which will be held at different points of time during the year. They include South Africa, Algeria, Tunisia, Namibia, Botswana, South Sudan, Rwanda, Ghana, Togo, Mozambique, Chad Republic and Burkina Faso.

In some countries, the balloting will be neither free nor fair. In many countries, curbs on opposition candidates, weary electorates, and the potential for manipulation and disinformation have made the fate of democracy a front-and-center campaign issue.

As people are keenly watching the elections and the possible outcomes, there is a growing realization that Planet Earth’s environmental problems need a closer watch and timely action to ward off climate change. The most affected region because of this step-motherly treatment of the environment is the African region. Even in the election manifestos of African countries, such issues are seldom highlighted, keeping the issue on the back burner.

Coming specifically to the African region, there is a growing apprehension that democratic values are taking a back seat as evident from the sporadic coups that are happening in the Sahel region, which is threatening to spread across sub-Saharan Africa and beyond. Even in countries that have a democratic system, rulers are manipulating the systems to continue in power although some of them have completed more than four decades in their position.

These unsavoury developments are taking place at a time the aspirations of the youth, who form the major proportion of the population in the region. They are looking forward to a better life, employment, and freedom to express themselves and urging to break bonds with centuries-old deprivation and subjugation. If the systems cannot provide that, there is a limit to their tolerance.
