Geoffrey Luchele, the   UPND leader belonging to the opposition (a political affiliation in Zambia) and an aspiring Parliamentary candidate for Mufulira Central Constituency has warned the Zambian government that prolonged load shedding was one of the factors that made the people of Zambia kick out the former regime from the rule.

This has come close on the heels of the statement of   Energy Minister Peter Kapala that Zesco power load shedding would start on 15th December 2022 owing to the low levels of water in the Kariba Dam. The load shedding will be up to six (6) hours daily until the water levels improve.

On July 27, 2022, President Hichilema told the nation that his government had succeeded in ending load-shedding in less than a year of being elected. Mr. Luchele said the load shedding announced by the Government was unjustifiable.

Mr. Luchele said the UPND had 23 years in the opposition which was enough to plan how to govern the nation and handle issues, such as load shedding. He said the People of Zambia understood that fuel increases in recent times were owing to the Russia and Ukraine war, but would not tolerate load shedding. He also questioned why Zesco was still exporting power when the nation was facing a deficit, which would kill many medium and small-scale businesses.
