One million Russian tourists are expected to visit Egypt in 2021 with the resumption of direct flights between the two countries. Flights between the Red Sea resorts of Sharm el-Sheikh and Hurghada, are also expected to resume shortly as reported by the deputy tourism minister of Egypt. Direct flights to the popular Red Sea resorts werewas suspended almost six years back after a Russian plane crashed in Sinai in October 2015, killing all 224 people on board.
Tourist arrivals in Egypt, a major source of income, plunged by 70 percent to 3.5 million in 2020 following the outbreak of Covid-19. In 2021, Egypt is set to receive 50 percent of the number of tourists it received in 2019. The country is hoping for tourism revenues of $6 billion $7 billion this year.
