Though US president has halted US funding to the World Health Organization (WHO), US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has assured that US funding to support the health sector of Africa will continue. Speaking to media, he pointed out that US has committed more than $170 million to fight Coronavirus in Africa. U.S. government has pledged a total assistance of $775 million to support the global fight against COVID-19. The United States is providing specific assistance to countries across Africa.
Angola has been allocated $570,000 in health assistance to help provide risk-communications and water and sanitation, and prevent and control infections in key health facilities in Angola. Botswana gets $1.5 million in health assistance to address the outbreak. More than $6 million in health and humanitarian funding will go toward risk-communications, water and sanitation, preventing and controlling infections in health facilities, public-health messaging for Burkina Faso. This includes $2.5 million in health assistance, $1.5 million in IDA humanitarian assistance, and more than $2.1 million in MRA humanitarian assistance, which will help protect the health of refugees, internally displaced persons, and their host communities in Burkina Faso during the pandemic.
For Cameroon, almost $8 million in health and humanitarian assistance will help provide infection-control in key health facilities, strengthen laboratories and surveillance, prepare communities, and boost local messaging. The assistance of $5.2 million for Central African Republic includes $3.5 million in IDA humanitarian assistance for risk-communications, preventing and controlling infections in health facilities, and safe water supply, and $1.7 million in MRA humanitarian assistance that will help protect the health of refugees, internally displaced persons, and their host communities in the Central African Republic during the pandemic. Republic of Congo (ROC) receives $250,000 in health assistance to fight COVIS19 while Chad will receive $3 million in humanitarian assistance. This includes $1 million in IDA for preventing and controlling infections in health facilities, raising community awareness of COVID-19, and improving hygiene, and more than $2 million in MRA humanitarian assistance. Côte d’Ivoire has been sanctioned $1.6 million in health assistance to address the outbreak.
The $14.4 million assistance to the Democratic Republic of the Congo includes $14.0 million in health assistance and IDA humanitarian assistance that will improve the prevention and control of infections in health facilities and support improved awareness of COVID-19. An additional $400,000 in MRA humanitarian assistance will help protect the health of refugees, internally displaced persons, etc. Djibouti is given $500,000 in health assistance to address the outbreak while Eswatini gets $750,000 to address the outbreak.
The $9 million assistance to counter COVID-19 for Ethiopia includes $8.3 million in health and IDA humanitarian assistance and $789,000 in MRA humanitarian assistance for refugees. Health assistance of $1.6 million and $500,000 to address the outbreak has been given to Ghana and Guinea respectively. Kenya’s almost $4.5 million in health and humanitarian assistance includes $3.5 million to bolster risk communication, prepare health-communication networks, etc and $947,000 in MRA humanitarian assistance for refugees and host communities.
Madagascar gets $2.5 million while Malawi gets $4.5 million in health assistance to address the outbreak. Assistance to Mali to the tune of $5.7 million for COVID-19 response includes $4.4 million in health and IDA humanitarian assistance and nearly $1.3 million in MRA humanitarian assistance to support refugees etc. Mauritania and Mauritius have been given $250,000 and $500,000 in health assistance to address the outbreak. The $5.8 million in health and IDA humanitarian funding to Mozambique will help provide risk communication, water and sanitation, and infection prevention and control in key health facilities.
Lesotho gets nearly $750,000 while Liberia gets $1 million in health assistance. Nearly $750,000 in health assistance to address the outbreak goes to Namibia. Niger’s $4 million assistance includes nearly $2.8 million in health and IDA humanitarian assistance and $1.2 million in MRA humanitarian assistance to support refugees.
Approximately $21.4 million has been given to Nigeria in assistance that includes nearly $20 million in health and IDA humanitarian funding for risk communication, water and sanitation activities, infection prevention, and coordination, and more than $1.4 million in MRA humanitarian assistance.
More than $2 million in assistance for Rwanda’s COVID-19 response includes $1.7 million in health assistance, and $474,000 in MRA humanitarian assistance to support UNHCR’s COVID-19 response for refugees and host communities in Rwanda. Senegal and Sierra Leone will get $3.9 million and $400,000 respectively in health assistance to address the outbreak. Nearly $12.5 million in assistance for Somalia includes $11.6 million in IDA humanitarian assistance, as well as $892,000 in MRA humanitarian assistance to support UNHCR’s COVID-19 response in Somalia.
Approximately $8.4 million in health assistance has been allocated to South Africa to counter COVID-19. Assistance of $13.1 million for South Sudan’s COVID-19 response includes $11.5 million in IDA humanitarian assistance nearly $1.6 million in MRA humanitarian assistance. Sudan’s share of $13.7 million in assistance includes $13 million in IDA humanitarian assistance and $671,000 in MRA humanitarian assistance to support refugees.
The $1.4 million in health assistance for Tanzania supports risk communication, water and sanitation, infection prevention and control, public health messaging, etc. Uganda’s $3.6 million assistance includes $2.3 million in health assistance to address the outbreak and nearly $1.3 million in MRA humanitarian assistance
The $3.4 million in health assistance supports risk communication, water and sanitation, infection prevention and control, public health messaging, etc in Zambia. Nearly $3 million in health and IDA humanitarian assistance will help Zimbabwe to prepare laboratories for large-scale testing, support case-finding activities for influenza-like illnesses, implement a public-health emergency plan for points of entry, and more.
