  • The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited and the National Office of Hydrocarbons and Mines of Morocco and the ECOWAS Commission have signed agreements on gas pipeline project

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited and the National Office of Hydrocarbons and Mines of Morocco and the ECOWAS Commission have signed agreements on the gas pipeline project. The Pipeline that originates from Brass Island of Nigeria and terminates at North of Morocco will be linked to the Maghreb European Pipeline that connects to Spain. Nigeria and Morocco and Ecowas signed the Memorandum of Understanding in Rabat. The Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline was initially proposed in December 2016.

According to the Federal Government, the Agreement will contribute significantly to harnessing Nigeria’s huge gas resources. The 7,000km long gas pipeline, is expected to reduce gas flaring in Nigeria, promote the diversification of energy resources in the country, and generate employment. The ambition of the project is to supply about three billion standard cubic feet of gas per day (3bscfd) along the West African Coast from Nigeria, Benin, Togo, Ghana, Côte d’ Ivoire, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea, Guinea Bissau, Gambia, Senegal and Mauritania to Morocco.

The agreement was signed by the Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Ltd, Mallam Mele Kyari on behalf of Nigeria, and Dr Amina Benkhadra, Director General of Morocco’s National Office for Hydrocarbons & Mines (ONHYM) signed on behalf of her country. From ECOWAS, Mr Sediko Douka, the ECOWAS Commissioner for Infrastructure, Energy and Digitalization signed the agreement.
