Restrictions on nightlife and meetings were imposed recently in three major cities in Ethiopia’s Amhara region, including the most populous, Gondar. Protests are against the dismantling of regional military forces across Ethiopia, which is a part of the truce agreed upon by the stakeholders to end the conflict in the Tigray region.

Restrictions are being imposed by the military command posts. This means now the federal army is in charge of ensuring security measures. The precarious state of affairs was created by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s federal government’s efforts to reassign members of the military forces, known as special forces, which have been gradually built up over the past 15 years by some regional states to the federal army or the police.

The “special forces” are powerful in the Amhara region.  They provided crucial assistance to the federal army during its conflict.  Motorized tricycles are now prohibited from traveling at night in the three cities. Instructions from the federal army are that bars and nightclubs must close at 9 p.m. The authorities also have prohibited strikes. All meetings must be reported to the authorities and carrying of weapons is prohibited.
