The presidential candidate of Niger’s ruling party Mohamed Bazoum has built considerable lead over his nearest rival.  He is projected to win more than 50% of the votes to get qualified for the post in the first round of polling itself.

As of late Friday ( yesterday),  Mohamed Bazoum  got  1.4 million votes. The main candidate contesting against him – former president Mahamane Ousmane – is trailing with 675,000 votes. The results are expected to be announced today (Saturday) any time when the counting gets over by the electoral commission. Earlier, the election commission thought that it could announce the results on Friday itself: but could not do so on account of delays in counting. There were 30 candidates contesting for the post of President.

Issoufou, who  assumed the office of president in   2011, after the country’s last coup in 2010, is voluntarily stepping down after two five-year terms. Bazoum in his electoral pitch to the nation assured the citizens security and more opportunities for education.
