Nigeria’s X’ Mas and New Year Celebrations Subdued Despite Federal Government Sops

Muted in the din of celebrations and festivities, there are visible signs of economic slowdown. Streets are full but a few shops are around because of the limited means at their command. Some not-so-popular markets are wearing a deserted look with buyers dwindling drastically

Nigeria’s Christmas and New Year festivities are known to permeate cheer and happiness across the cross-section of people. Despite being hit by economic slowdown, festivities in major cities and hinterlands are continuing with pomp and glory. The federal government seems to be popping up the festive mood among the citizenry while extending some travel stops for people to join their families in far-flung areas.

Muted in the din of celebrations and festivities, there are visible signs of economic slowdown. Streets are full but a few shops are around because of the limited means at their command. Some not-so-popular markets are wearing a deserted look with buyers dwindling drastically.  It is also reported that the traveling took a bite despite the government’s proposal for extending subsidized and even free tickets.

Inflation and unemployment are interfering with festivities. With the phasing out of the subsidies on oil, people are left to face high inflation which has breached beyond 30%. People are foregoing visits to their homes to cut down their expenses. There is a good number of people who are optimistic about a good future in the short run for the sacrifices they are making now.
