Nigeria’s Labour Party leader, Peter Obi, said that he would challenge the results of the presidential election in a court of law. He said that his party would explore all legal and peaceful options to get the mandate back. Bola Ahmed Tinubu, 70, won the presidential election with more than 8.8 million votes, or 36% of the vote, according to the election commission.

Peter Obi, 61, a youth favourite, came third with 25% of the vote. This was a first in Nigeria’s democratic history for an outsider from the two main political groups to garner a vote share of that magnitude. Former vice-president Abubakar of the main opposition party, PDP,  got 29% of the vote share.

The election, which was generally peaceful, was marked by delays in the counting of votes and major failures in the electronic transfer of results. The ECOWAS observer also noted such hiccups in the election but has asked all parties to go by the election results. In the meantime, opposition parties claim that the votes were massively rigged. In the past, elections in Africa’s most populous country have often been marred by allegations of fraud and violence. Candidates who want to contest the election will have 21 days to file a lawsuit after the results are announced.
