Nigeria’s election commission has postponed the March 11 election of governors of the states citing logistics challenges. Now, the elections will be held on March 18.
The move will allow more time for voting machines used in last month’s presidential and legislative elections to be reconfigured and deployed for the upcoming vote. The gubernatorial vote is part of Nigeria’s general elections for four-year single terms for major political positions. Last month’s presidential vote was won by the ruling party’s Bola Tinubu, which is being contested by the opposition.
Importantly, a local court recently approved the electoral body’s request to reset the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System. New technologies are used this year in Nigeria’s elections to make them more transparent. Observer groups have criticized the election commission over the glitches that happened in the presidential elections. Opposition parties have listed them in the several challenges filed by the opposition against the ruling party’s victory in the presidential election. The glitches, the opposition parties claim, gave room for the ruling party to tamper with the results. In the meantime, runner-up Atiku Abubakar has called for the cancellation of the presidential election. The Labour party presidential candidate also said he had proof that he won the contest.
