A court in the Nigerian capital Abuja has awarded him a compensation sum of 100,000 dollars (N100, 000 000) in damages for his unlawful detention.
Nigeria had to pay dearly for the unlawful detention of Godwin Emefiele, the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), who was detained and accused of corruption charges. A court in the Nigerian capital Abuja has awarded him a compensation sum of 100,000 dollars (N100, 000 000) in damages for his unlawful detention.
The High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) judge Olukayode Adeniyi, ruled that the Department of State Service (DSS) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC)’s detention of Emefiele in the course of their investigation was a violation of his right to liberty. The suit was brought by Emefiele challenging his detention for several weeks by the EFCC. The court order further stated that the federal government and its agents were restrained from re-arresting Emefiele unless an order was obtained through a competent court. Emefiele was in detention for nearly five months.
A suit filed on behalf of the former central bank chief had mentioned that the applicant was detained for 151 days contrary to the law stipulating 48 hours and had urged the court to enter judgment and award damages in favour of the detainee.
