Domestic airlines in Nigeria experienced low passenger traffic as flights resumed recently. Three airports – Murtala Muhammed Airport (MMA2) Lagos, General Aviation Terminal (GAT) domestic terminal, Lagos, and Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja – were opened with amid strict safety protocols.
A few airlines, such as Air Peace, Arik Air, Max Air and Ibom Air-were pressed into service on Lagos-Abuja routes with about 50-60 percent load factor. Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) cleared only six airlines to restart domestic flights. The rest of the airlines are still engaged in completing certain documentation process to ascertain payment of their insurance and that of their staff.
The passengers booked for flights are wearing face masks, social distancing, hand sanitizers, and undergo checking of body temperatures. These are mandatory safety conditions imposed by the civil aviation authority aimed at curbing the spread of COVID-19.
