Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari recently inaugurated Borno’s first double decker flyover which has upper and lower lanes. The flyover is part of a 10 kilometers carriageway constructed in the area to decongest the city. The area is notorious for frequent Jihadist attacks for several years.
Buhari also met with several local leaders in the area. He also inaugurated an education center. Even just before the visit of the president, local media reported that jihadist fighters fired rockets that killed people and injured several people near Maiduguri airport.
In the past, ISWAP and its rival Boko Haram launched deadly rocket attacks on Maiduguri. More than 40,000 people were killed in the attacks, which also displaced nearly two million, during the insurgency years.
