Nigerian civil servants can hope for a hike in their salaries. The hope for the bonanza has been triggered by the outgoing President Buhari as a parting gift to several thousands of civil servants, who were lobbying for the increase for quite some time. Though it was mooted by the outgoing president, it has to be implemented by the incoming president Bola Tinubu.

Bola Tinubu has an assortment of problems to address, including inflation, shortages of essential goods, transition to the new currency, and a lot more. Civil servants may not gain much from this hike because it might come at the cost of the withdrawal of the fuel subsidy, among other things,  wherein the civil servants might have to shell out more from their pocket while transiting to the office and back. With the increase in salary, the woes of the salaried class will be addressed because of the phase-out of the fuel subsidy, but  the ordinary citizens have to bear the brunt of that since there is no mechanism to insulate them from the hike.

Oil in Nigeria is a political commodity in as much as it is a paradox. Nigeria is the largest producer of oil in Africa. But it is importing refined oil since the west African country does not have adequate refining capacity. Citizens believe that the oil subsidy is one of the benefits that they enjoy, being the largest producer and exporter of oil in Africa. It is an irony  that large queues in petrol pumps is a regular sight in the country. Sometimes, fuel is available in the black market at a higher cost. During the election days, there were violent protests against the nonavailability of fuel.

Political observers feel that the going for the president-elect may not be smooth since he has to overcome a number of issues. A salary hike is one among these  since the next government will have to generate resources for that.
