Nigeria will get a European Union donation of US $55m to aid the
country in its fight against Covid-19. This aid was announced after
a meeting between an EU delegation and Nigerian President Muhammadu
Buhari.
President Buhari. While thanking the EU delegation for the largesse
said that the fund will be used for Nigeria’s efforts for controlling
and containing the Covid-19, particularly the community spread. This
donation, so far, is the largest single contribution to Nigeria and
the largest support that the EU is providing anywhere outside Europe.
The European Union is also mobilizing other sources of funding. So
far, the EU paid 1.2 million Euros to UNICEF and goods purchased
through that funding are expected in the country soon.
In the meantime, President Buhari extended by two weeks a federal
lockdown imposed on commercial capital Lagos, Ogun states and the
Federal Capital Territory (Abuja). These areas are most affected in
the pandemic.
