Nigeria: President Imposes Emergency Rule in Oil-Rich Rivers State

(3 Minutes Read)

Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has suspended state governor Siminalayi Fubara and all lawmakers, appointing a former navy chief to oversee the oil-rich state. The president criticised Fubara for failing to take action against recent incidents of pipeline vandalism, including an explosion that caused a fire on the Trans Niger Pipeline.

Rivers State is one of Nigeria’s leading oil producers, playing a crucial role in the country’s status as Africa’s largest oil producer. A political crisis has been escalating for months between Fubara and state lawmakers. Recently, some legislators began impeachment proceedings against the governor, accusing him of various illegalities concerning the state budget and legislative composition. Many of these lawmakers are supported by former governor Nyesom Wike, who now serves as a prominent minister in Tinubu’s administration. “With all these issues, no responsible president would sit idly by while such a serious situation persists without taking necessary constitutional measures,” Tinubu stated.

The President’s declaration of a state of emergency allows the federal government to regulate the state and deploy security forces if required. Retired Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas will serve as Rivers State’s administrator, while the judiciary will continue its functions. Following Tinubu’s announcement, military trucks were swiftly dispatched to the Rivers State Government House in Port Harcourt.
