The Nigerian federal government has approved the Nigeria Immigration Service to increase the fees for Nigerian passports by 43%.

The Nigerian federal government has approved the Nigeria Immigration Service to increase the fees for Nigerian passports by 43%. The 32-page passport which fees N35,000 as of the beginning of next month would be issued at N50,000 while the 64-page passport with ten years validity which presently stands at N70,000 would be issued at N100,000, a 42.86% increase.

The decision was taken as part of efforts to maintain the quality and integrity of the Nigerian Standard Passport, stated the spokesman of NIS, Kenneth Udo.

He noted that the federal government approved the upward review of the fees for the passport effective from 1st September 2024. Based on the review, a 32-page Passport booklet with 5-year validity previously charged at Thirty-five Thousand Naira (N35,000.00) will now be Fifty Thousand Naira (N50,000.00) only; while a 64-page Passport booklet with 10-year validity which was Seventy Thousand Naira (N70,000.00) will be One Hundred Thousand Naira (N100,000.00) only. He however said the fees remain unchanged in Diaspora.

According to the 2024 Henley Passport Index, Nigeria’s passport is ranked 92nd in the world, making it the 92nd most powerful travel document. This is an improvement from 2021 when Nigeria’s passport was ranked 103rd, its lowest ranking ever. In 2022, Nigeria’s ranking rose to 98th, and in 2023, it improved further to 97th. According to the Passport Index, Nigerian passport holders can travel visa-free to 82 countries and territories. To travel to other countries, they can apply for an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) or visa online in advance. Some countries allow visas on arrival.
