Ten Nigerian cabinet ministers have resigned to run in next year’s election. This is sequel to the call made by President Buhari asking all ministers, ambassadors, agency heads and other political appointees including the central bank governor to resign on or by May 16 in case they wanted to contest for the next year’s election.

The ten ministers who have resigned are aspirants for the different posts in the next government. They include junior petroleum minister, ministers of justice, transport, labour, Niger Delta, science and technology and women’s affairs and junior ministers for mines and education. Those ministers would be replaced soon, according to government sources.

Nigeria’s electoral law was amended in February to prevent political appointees from contesting party primaries or voting during such primaries. With their resignations, they will become eligible for contesting in the election. Nigeria will go to polls early next year to elect a new president, state governors, senators, and members of the House of Representatives. Vice president Yemi Osinbajo, has been exempted from the directive since he was jointly elected with incumbent Buhari. He is widely expected to succeed Buhari. Nigeria’s political parties have time till June 3 to pick their candidates.

Buhari’s APC will hold primary elections to select candidates, including for president, at the end of this month. More than 20 APC candidates have so far registered to contest the primary vote for the presidential ticket.
