Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari recently received a delegation from the Open Government Partnership (OGP) Support Unit, led by the Chief Executive Officer, Sanjay Pradhan. During the meeting, the president highlighted the benefits Nigeria has derived from joining the transparency body in 2016.
The Open Government Partnership (OGP) is a multilateral initiative set up with the objective to secure concrete commitments from national and sub-national governments to promote transparency, empower citizens, fight corruption, and harness technologies to strengthen governance. The OGP is overseen by a steering committee including representatives of governments and civil society organizations.
Buhari said when he committed Nigeria to the membership of the Open Government Partnership at the London Anti-Corruption Summit. It has helped the country in its fight against corruption, ensuring transparency in governance and streamlining to a great extent the process of government procurement. Two action plans have been already signed between Nigeria and the organization with specific objectives. By next month (in August), Nigeria would sign the third Action Plan, which is in the final stages of development.
The president outlined some of the successes that the country has recorded since it began to implement the Open Government Partnership in 2016. Important among them was transparency in the budget processes and enlisting the participation of citizens in the development process.
