This has resulted in the removal of Nigeria from the Piracy list of the International Maritime Bureau in its Third Quarter 2021 report.
.This was announced by the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Awwal Zubairu Gambo at the closing ceremony of the 2022 CNS Retreat with PSOs, FOCs and Commanders of Formations in Abuja. He added that Nigeria is committed to sustain the tempo of Nigeria’s Maritime Security Operations efforts for Nigeria as well as the neighbouring states to save the entire Gulf of Guinea from acts of piracy and other criminal activities. In view of the Nigerian Navy’s lead role in the regional effort at combating piracy and armed attack against shipping, he warned the commanders of stringent action against any act of indiscipline, fraud or connivance with criminal elements in delivering their duties. He added that a nation’s maritime resources are critical to national prosperity, and therefore NN’s operational efficiency is central to a nation’s development.
