People of Niger are eagerly waiting for the general election results this coming Sunday. Results of the presidential election are expected to mark the first democratic transition between two elected presidents in the country, where democracy is taking roots.
The National Independent electoral commission (CENI) on Tuesday continued to announce results from various municipalities. Till December 29, the commission had released results of 20 municipalities out of 266 in the country. The results do not indicate any discernible trend for any party or candidates, making it impossible to gauge the outcome of the Sunday December 27 vote.
Mohammed Bazoum,60, of the ruling party is the favorite to win the elections. The question is whether he can clear his name in the first round of election itself. Over 7.4 million voters exercised the franchise of the 23 million citizens. There are 30 candidates
including two former presidents and two former prime ministers contesting the elections.
The election observation mission of the International Organization of the Francophonie (OIF) gave Niger a satisfactory report for conducting the election.
