It has been reported that STMicroelectronics of Morocco will open a new production line dedicated to producing electronic chips for the American car manufacturer Tesla in the city of Bouskoura. Moulay Hafid Elalamy, Morocco’s Minister of Industry had announced fortnight back that STMicroelectronics had won a contract to manufacture microchips for Tesla. This is a significant development as the chip is a very important part, the central connector, of Tesla.
The extreme shortage of electronic chips during the pandemic was a major setback. The sector depended heavily on Taiwanese manufacturer TSMC. This has led companies to seriously consider diversifying their sources of chips.
This is part of a new business strategy for STMicroelectronics to reposition itself in the automobile industry. As part of this strategy, the French-Italian multinational corporation also plans to equip Renault’s electric and hybrid cars with components until 2026.
Morocco has recently been trying to boost its efforts in adopting sustainable green energy sources. The city of Benguerir recently launched a production line to manufacture charging stations for electric vehicles.
