New Suez Canal registers passage of 90,000 ships in five years

The New Suez canal is ticking. Data released by the Suez Canal Authority says that  90,000 ships have passed through the New Suez Canal carrying  a net tonnage of 5.5bn tones. Converted into revenue realization, it would work out to US $27.2 billion since its inauguration five years ago. These data was revealed by Osama Rabie, Chairperson of the Suez Canal Authority, recently.

This revelation came at a time the new Suez Canal New Suez Canal is celebrating its fifth anniversary in Ismailia. The national waterway is progressing at a steady pace as per the schedule, despite the global challenges. A total 11,250 ships transit the Suez Canal, with a total tonnage of 693m tonnes, and revenues of US $3.3bn, during the Covid-19 days.

A sizable part of Egypt’s income comes from the Nile be it from shipping, water or electricity or agriculture and is the life line of the Egyptian economy.
